About Catie Wolyn

My art primarily represents everyday objects turned on their head, forcing the viewer to see things in a whole new perspective. I do this by creating a more vast contrast and bringing out specific colors that others may not see at first. Classic drawing skills are very important to my work, the idea of clear lines and realistic perspective creates a whole new world for my viewer to be engrossed in. From the very beginning of my art career I have always gravitated towards a more lively color palette. I primarily work in acryla gouache because it allows me to see the changes in color and value without a reflective glare. When it comes to a dry medium, my choice is pen and ink which lets me create a vast contrast with the same utensil.
I am very much inspired by the Surrealists and the father of the movement, Salvador Dali. My work differs from them in many ways though. I create dark shadows contrasted by very bright highlighted colors. My work sets a darker mood for the viewer, allowing them to enter into my subconscious while enjoying an interesting composition. My subject matter varies from piece to piece but my inspiration is always the same: I take scenes from my dreams and put an artistic spin on them. I use many different lights and shadows, colors and tones to recreate the same mood and reaction to the scene that I had for my viewer to experience. Throughout this process of creation, I exude all of my innermost thoughts and emotions into these pieces.
